How to Build a Bankroll Quickly

Most of the best poker players today got their start with a small bankroll and then slowly moved up in stakes from there. The key to making money with poker is to build a big bankroll, move up in stakes and continue to win. If you can do that, there’s a lot of money to be made in poker.

The following tips will help you learn how to build a proper poker bankroll quickly. If you go about it the right way, you won’t have to work your way up through the stakes for the next ten years. With the right strategy, you can build a five figure bankroll within the next 6-12 months.

Become a Skilled Poker Player

If you want to build a big bankroll, you’re going to have to become a very skilled poker player. This is the most difficult hurdle for new players, but if you can become a skilled poker player, you will have won half the battle.

The goal here is to get good enough to where you never have to deposit again. Losing poker players can’t build a bankroll because they are constantly losing it! It’s pretty obvious but it’s worth mentioning. If you want to build a bankroll, you need to be able to beat the games.

There are several things you can do to become a more skilled poker player. First of all, you need to read everything you can about poker strategy. Visit websites, read books, watch videos, consider poker training and talk to other poker players. Secondly, join a couple of poker strategy forums and get in there and talk strategy with other poker players. Some of the best poker strategy in the world can be learned by participating in forums. And finally, you need to get out there and practice.

Get Poker Bonuses

When you’re first getting started, poker bonuses will help immensely in building a bankroll. Every poker site on the internet has a deposit bonus for new players. Get as many of these bonuses as you can while you’re starting out. Deposit the maximum for every bonus, clear the bonus and then move on to the next one.

Deposit bonuses add up for a lot of money. For example, the Ultimate Bet bonus will get you a bonus worth up to $1100. There are dozens of poker sites out there that offer these kinds of bonuses. It’s very possible to earn $10,000 in your first year through bonus money alone.

The only catch is that you have to be a winning poker player. These bonuses won’t help you build a bankroll if you lose all that money at the tables. That goes back to our first tip: you need to become a skilled poker player. Anyone can do it, by the way. You don’t have to be a genius; you just have to be willing to work harder than the next guy.

Play Within Your Bankroll

The fastest way to decimate your bankroll is to play at stakes that are too high for your bankroll. Poker is naturally a swingy game no matter how good you are. The secret to surviving those swings is to play at games for which you have a large bankroll. A couple of generally accepted bankroll guidelines are as follows:

  • No Limit Cash Games – Play at stakes for which you have at least 30 buyins. So if you have a $3,000 bankroll, you can play at $0.50/$1.00 NL or lower.
  • Fixed Limit Cash Games – Play at stakes for which you have at least 500 big bets.

  • SNG Tournaments – Play at stakes for which you have at least 50 buyins.

  • Multi Table Tournaments – Play at stakes for which you have at least 100 buyins.

Move Up in Stakes

Moving up in stakes helps you earn money faster, which helps you build your bankroll faster. You have to be careful when moving up, though, because the games get a little harder every time you move up. The key to moving up safely is to move up slowly.

Make sure you can beat your current stakes before you move up to the next level. Once you know you can beat the stakes you’re at, you can then move up to the next level – provided you have the bankroll to do so. Don’t be afraid to move back down if you start getting knocked around at your new stakes. It’s very common for poker players to take multiple shots at a certain level before they can stick around.
