PokerUtility.com interviews the developer of NoteCaddy

PokerUtility- Why is note taking so important?

NoteCaddyIn today’s game, it is important to get the best intelligence possible on your opponents.

In games where everyone plays 21/17, HUD stats can often times fail to tell you the details needed to make reads.

There are tendencies that good players look for, and these make great notes

PokerUtility- What skill level is NoteCaddy best suited to?

NoteCaddyOut of the box, NoteCaddy is suited mostly to micro and small stakes players.

The 50 different notes that it can generate on players are fairly general.  Mid and high stakes players

could also make use of NoteCaddy but they’d have to put some work in to tell NoteCaddy what exactly they tend to look for.

PokerUtility- What features or additions are coming up that you can share with us?

NoteCaddy- There is going to be an option to color code players based on what types of notes

have been taken for them.  This feature has been requested many times so hopefully many people find

value in it.  Also, I plan to add a “history” window where you can look at the hands that caused NoteCaddy to

take certain notes.  This will hopefully be a great way to study your opponents.

PokerUtility- How has NoteCaddy changed your own game?

NoteCaddy- Although I play rarely now, when I do play I look carefully at each hand and see what actions

were “note worthy”.  I do this mostly so I can create new definitions to share with customers, but I find that it also

gives me a reason to focus carefully on different things that players do.  As far as using notes that were

created, notes on river value betting tendencies have helped me make some folds that otherwise would have

been too difficult to justify in my own mind.

PokerUtility- What options exist for customer support?

NoteCaddy- Forums are available at http://forums.assaultware.com.  Email support is also available

through support@notecaddy.com.  The forum is preferred unless you want to post something that you’d

rather not have out in the open.

PokerUtility- Can you give us a brief biography and how you started NoteCaddy?

NoteCaddy- I started working as a professional software developer in 2004 and started playing poker

shortly afterwards.  I never took poker too seriously but did win over $30k between 2005 and 2008 playing online.

I quit for a year when I decided the games were becoming too aggressive.  I started up again at the end of 2009

and while I played I tried to remain competitive by taking lots of notes.  I noticed that I was taking the same

notes over and over and that was when I decided an application could be developed as a more efficient way of doing this.

I started NoteCaddy in March of 2010 and have been quite busy with it since then.

PokerUtility- Give us an overview of NoteCaddy and how it can help online poker players.

NoteCaddy- If you believe notes are a good thing to have, then the value of NoteCaddy is easy to see.

It is difficult to take good notes manually when playing multiple tables.  NoteCaddy allows you to have better

notes and play more tables.  Besides timing tells, NoteCaddy can be scripted to take any note that you could

and in most cases even more efficiently.

PokerUtility- What's the general message from NoteCaddy to the online poker community?

NoteCaddy- The game of poker is like an arms race; find the weapons that work best for you because

your or get run over by the people who do.

PokerUtility- Why is NoteCaddy unique in the marketplace, what does it have over its competitors?

NoteCaddy- As far as I know, there are no supported automatic note taking applications besides NoteCaddy.

Several people have tried but it is very difficult to get any software going.  Applications that overwrite people’s

files and databases with new data are also very dangerous and thus are even more stressful for developers

when things go wrong.  The user base of NoteCaddy has grown consistently over the last three months

since its beta and I assure you that it’s not going anywhere.

PokerUtility- What's one thing that anyone purchasing NoteCaddy should know about it?

NoteCaddy- NoteCaddy is not a silver bullet that will make you a huge winner overnight.

Out of the box, it will give you a small edge but if you want to get the maximum value out of it, you need to be

prepared to put some work in.

PokerUtility- What sites is NoteCaddy compatible with now? Do you plan to add more in the future?

NoteCaddy- NoteCaddy currently works with the following sites:

  • PokerStars
  • Full Tilt Poker
  • Cereus network
  • PartyPoker
  • iPoker network
  • OnGame network
  • MicroGaming network
  • Merge network
  • Bodog Poker

Support for Pacific Poker will be added in the next few weeks.  I will add support for any site that is requested
of me as long as PT3/HEM support it and someone sends me hand histories for the site.

PokerUtility- How long was NoteCaddy is the Beta phase and what were some of your major hurdles?

NoteCaddy- NoteCaddy was in beta for just over a month.  This was not nearly long enough.

The major hurdle that I had and still have are balancing feature requests with stability.  Of course I want to give

people what they ask for.  There have been many times, however, when this caused me to publish buggy

releases and make other customers unhappy.  Now I am slowing down the release calendar so I have more time for

testing and so far it has helped somewhat.

PokerUtility- Do you have plans to release a Mac version?

NoteCaddy- Currently there are no plans for a Mac version.  An Omaha version is being strongly considered, though.

UPDATE! NoteCaddy now offer an Omaha Version and supports many more poker rooms- read our NoteCaddy review for more information or visit the NoteCaddy website.
